Being nestled in Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness presents opportunities to co-exist with many wild animals. It’s not uncommon for residents to see owls, opossums, raccoons, and even foxes. Most recently though, several neighbors have reported sightings of coyotes and hearing their signature howls throughout the neighborhood. Coyotes are mostly nocturnal, so sightings are often between dusk and dawn, though it is typical for them to make more daytime appearances in early spring. Because coyotes will feed on small animals, neighbors should stay alert on behalf of their pets and can take small steps to deter them. TWRA’s website has great resources to learn more about these animals and how to make outdoor spaces less appealing.
